Hands-On Sports Media Workshop Helps Students Level Up in Broadcasting

At the Striv Education Sports Media Workshop at Midland University, students from schools across Nebraska stepped behind the cameras, mics, and production controls to experience what it’s really like to run a live broadcast.

They didn’t just watch a presentation — they got real reps.

Learning by Doing: The Broadcast Simulator

Students rotated through roles as directors, producers, announcers, replay ops, and audio engineers during a TriCaster broadcast simulation. They used real game footage from their schools to recreate live-game conditions, reflect on their performance, and sharpen their communication.

Scott Parson, Broadcast Adviser at Arlington, summed it up perfectly:

“We really enjoyed the Broadcast Simulator. We have a couple of things in common with our setup, but we learned many things today. It was a bit like they say we were drinking water from a fire hose. It was a good experience, and I learned a lot of new things, saw the possibilities of where our broadcast can go next, and got out of our comfort zone.”

Learning from Industry Pros

Teachers and students also heard from Mike Sautter and the Hurrdat Sports social media team, who shared their process for content creation and storytelling in modern sports media.

Sautter reminded students that failure is part of growth:

“Learn how to fail, because you will.”

It was a reminder that creativity, like broadcasting, takes practice and resilience.

Community and Collaboration

The workshop wasn’t about competition — it was about connection.

Students learned side-by-side with peers from other schools, sharing ideas and discovering new ways to run their school broadcasts.

Events like this are what make Striv Education unique — a place where schools come together to save time, empower students, and grow stronger media programs.
