How Nixa High School Takes Their Broadcast on the Road

In one of our latest episodes of Season 2 of our Educator Conversations video series, Striv CEO, Taylor Siebert, sits down with Jordan Burns, a Business Teacher at Nixa High School in Missouri. They discuss how Nixa's Broadcasting Program has erupted in growth, transforming from a one camera setup to now a traveling production with 13 student roles.

Jordan emphasizes that one of the most important thing to know as a new digital media or broadcast teacher is to just start. It's okay to start small. Get started. People will notice, tune in, talk about it, and the growth and support will snowball from there!

Nixa's Broadcast Program is a true testament to starting small and allowing the students to lead the way of growth. "It's really been the kids pushing to make the next big thing happen," said Jordan. Nixa started with a one-camera production that once upon thought the biggest obstacle was adding a second camera. Now the thriving program takes 13 students to run full productions, broadcasting over 160 events last year (80 of which were full productions).

One of the best things Jordan has witnessed that has come from the enormous growth of Nixa's Broadcasting Program is the student transformation. He's seen students who were non-verbal in Kindergarten become their school's first ever student announcer. He's watched his broadcasting kids overcome speech issues to commentate games with over 1,000 viewers! Jordan's observed students interview opposing team coaches, communicate effectively in their broadcasts, and articulating issues while actively problem-solving.
