Periodic Table to Productions: Ryan Smith’s Journey from Chemistry to Media & Broadcasting

Ready to dive into another enlightening episode of Educator Conversations? This time, we’re spotlighting the fantastic Ryan Smith, Science and Broadcasting Teacher at Grand Island Central Catholic, as he chats with Taylor Siebert, CEO of Striv Education.

Here's the pearls of wisdom Ryan shares about starting and nurturing a broadcasting and digital media program:

Starting Strong

Ryan’s golden rule for kicking off a broadcasting program? Let the kids learn by doing!

He emphasizes the importance of allowing students to make mistakes and learn from them before aiming for perfection. This hands-on approach fosters a deeper understanding and encourages creativity.

Communication Skills Unleashed

Broadcasting and digital media have a remarkable impact on students' communication skills. Ryan notes that even the quietest students often become the best communicators.

Through activities like multi-cam productions and commentary, students learn to express themselves clearly and effectively. Scheduling also plays a crucial role, teaching students to communicate and coordinate within their team.

Transformation Through Creation

Watching students transform through content creation is one of Ryan’s greatest joys.

Over the course of the year, students take immense pride in their work, their school, and their team. Even those reluctant at first eventually dive in with enthusiasm, thanks to Ryan’s persistent recruiting efforts in the hallways.

Preparation for the Digital Workforce

Ryan highlights that students gain invaluable skills for the digital workforce. They become adept at creating infographics, short videos, and handling stressful situations while problem-solving on the fly.

These experiences equip them with a versatile skill set that’s highly sought after in today’s digital age.

From Chemistry to Broadcasting

Ryan’s journey from Chemistry to broadcasting is an inspiring story. With a shoutout to Colleen Childers and support from Five Points Bank, Ryan transitioned from the lab to the broadcast booth.

Starting with live streaming, his program has evolved into multi-cam productions and podcasting. And last year mentoring a student as he developed FINISH STRONG—a documentary covering Sharon Zavala and the GICC volleyball team.

His enthusiasm is palpable as he reflects on the positive impact this transition has had on his students.

Striv Shoutout

Ryan credits Striv for making all of this possible. Without our support, he admits he might have stopped after the first year.

Our ability to provide in-classroom or in-gym assistance has been a game-changer, significantly enhancing what the students can produce. For Ryan, Striv is an essential partner in GICC's broadcasting growth.
